Debbie is a zoologist and Arctic wildlife specialist with extensive experience in remote and high-exposure environments. She works internationally as an expedition leader and wildlife professional, combining scientific knowledge with practical field awareness.
Her work is driven by one central principle: understanding natural behavior is the foundation of both safety and animal welfare.
With over a decade of professional experience as a dolphin trainer, Debbie developed a deep understanding of behavioral conditioning, stress indicators, and welfare-based animal management. This behavioral foundation now informs her work in wild and expeditionary settings, where accurate interpretation can prevent escalation and reduce risk.
Since 2019, Debbie has led and supported expeditions across the Arctic and sub-Arctic, including Greenland, Svalbard, the Canadian Arctic, Iceland, Northern Norway, and New Zealand. Her field experience ranges from marine expeditions snorkeling among whales and orcas to wildlife-focused operations observing Polar bears and muskoxen, as well as Arctic bear guard deployments where early detection and behavioral assessment are critical for safety.
In addition to field leadership, Debbie delivers lectures and scenario-based workshops focused on Arctic wildlife behavior and conflict prevention.
A core element of her training is correcting the frequent misinterpretation of wildlife behavior. Animals are often placed into simplified behavioral “categories” that do not accurately reflect their actual state or intent.
Her workshops focus on:
-
Identifying behavior based on observable indicators rather than assumption
-
Correct interpretation of posture, movement, and distance tolerance
-
Recognizing early stress and escalation signals
-
Distinguishing curiosity, warning, and defensive behavior
-
Understanding how human posture, movement, and spatial positioning are perceived by the animal
-
Adjusting one’s own body language and presence to prevent unnecessary escalation
By combining accurate behavioral reading with awareness of how humans are interpreted within the animal’s perceptual framework, teams respond earlier, act more deliberately, and significantly reduce risk.
Wildlife documentation and species monitoring are also part of her professional activities, contributing to conservation initiatives and environmental reporting.
Scientific Contribution
Debbie has contributed to scientific research, including co-authoring work on previously undocumented Orca behavior observed in the wild.
In the spring of 2022, Debbie co-founded Wild-Encounters together with her partner Johnny, combining complementary expertise to create a company focused on Arctic wildlife safety, expedition support, and behavioral risk management.
When not deployed in the field, Debbie continues exploring remote regions overland with Johnny in their self-built Land Rover camper, always with wildlife observation at the center of the journey.
